Quiet Sunday at the Club

My mom asked me to play bridge with her this afternoon in our local club game. Playing with her is always an adventure. If the cards cooperate, we can have a really good game. The problem is that my mom plays a really incomplete convention card. So when those funky hands come up, there's often no bid. Our card is basically SAYC only not SA -- 2/1, and the only real conventions we agreed on were Jacoby 2N, weak jump shifts, and Cappelletti. Everything else was super basic.

All problems matchpoints, table results in the comments:

1. Favorable, 4th seat, you hold:

A65 8 AJ8743 AKQ

(P) P (P) 1D
(P) 2H (P) ?

2. Favorable, 4th seat again:

AKT96 76 K83 872

(1H) 2C (2D) ?

2a. Let's assume that no matter what you bid, the auction continues
(3H) 4C (4D) ?
How high do you plan to compete, and what, if anything, will you double?

3. Unfavorable, 2nd seat:

KJ4 5 QJ76 K6543

(P) P (P) 1C
(P) 1D (P) 1H
(P) ?

Do you agree with 1D here? Remember, no inverted minors or carnage raises or anything fun like that.

4. All white, 2nd seat:
K863 J64 KJT98 A

(1C) X (2C) X
(P) 2D (P) 2H
(3C) ?

Mom doesn't really know responsive doubles, so the X after 2C is open to interpretation. What do you think pard has shown you, and where do you go from here?

1. We'd agreed on weak jump shifts, but we hadn't discussed what the expected range should be. If pard has a good heart suit, this might well make 3N. Since Mom's not a junior, I was worried she'd be on the strong side for her bid, but I decided to trust her to have a truly weak hand and I decided on 3D. This got checked out and dummy came down with:
Jxxx Jxxxxx x xx

I actually think I'd bid 1H with Mom's hand, given her spade situation. No matter, my +130 was a top against the others who tried 2 and 3 NT over pard's heart bid.

2. I didn't know how Mom would take X here, and I also wasn't sure if 2D on my right was intended as a game force or not. Their card said 2/1 but I didn't want to clue them in by asking about interference. I assumed that they would compete higher than us, so I'd conceal my spades for now and just show a fit with pard. I bid 3C, and the auction proceeded as described.

2a. Over 4D, I bid 4S. I don't know if it's right to compete so much when they've yet to agree on a fit at the 4 level, but I wanted this hand, and didn't want to have to compete to 5C if pard could pass 4S. Lefty doubled with authority, and Mom wasted no time in pulling out 5C. I was shocked to see this get checked around. I was sure it was down when lefty showed out on the Diamond Ace lead, but when the next trick went Q - K - HEART, I thought it was pretty nice of them to give us a gift like this. But it was no gift -- lefty is 5-8-0-0. Mom had to lose one trump trick, but no more, and 5C was a top when other tables were in 4H making and 5H down one. I sort of doubt the bidding was the same anywhere else.

3. Over 1H, I bid 2N. 3C might be the "right" call, but I wanted the lead coming to my hand, and I think some level of NT is where this hand belongs anyway. Mom lifted to 3 with an okay 14-count, and I found an extra trick to make 4, which did not earn all the matchpoints I thought I deserved, because an opponent at another table was kind enough to revoke. Don't you hate it when that happens?

4. Mom held this hand. I think it's about 50/50 to overcall 1D or X, and I have no beef with her choice here, but she didn't think about what I was showing at all, and chose to pass 3C, and pass again when I bid 3D. Before I put the dummy down, she said "You have 4 spades, don't you?" 3D making 4 was a bad board opposite all the 3S making 3 contracts at the other tables. My hand here was:

QJT9 KQ92 432 87

Maybe a little light for my own X, but it felt right. And I think I have to bid 3D when 3C gets passed around to me. Feel free to disagree with me here.

1. Pass
Playing partner for QJ10xxx and out or some other less-than-6HCP hand.

2. 2s
2a. Double to let partner know i have something, if he doesn't double 4h then I will bid 5c.

3. Disagree, would bid 3c, would bid 3c at second chance

4. Pass
With 3451 I'd probably bid 3h, so partner should basically know what I have at this point. Surely she knows my hand better than I know hers.

1. Pard should be worse than a normal weak two in hearts, maybe KJTxxx and out. This is probably our last chance to go plus. Pass.

2a. Well, a Snapdragon double would certainly be best here, but I'm sure you're not playing them... so I'll overbid with 2S.

2b. Now that I have my lead-director in, I raise to 5C and pop anything higher.

3. I would have bid an invitational 3C on the first round... I don't want partner to correct on 3433. In this position, though, I'd probably rightside and bid 2N.

4. Pard's either 4-4 in the majors, or has a club stack. I'm fairly min for my actions so far, so I'll pass and pass pard's double of 3C. If she pulls to 3d or 3H, I'll bid 3S.
